Collagen constitutes more than 30% of the total protein content in humans and forms the fundamental building blocks of connective tissues such as bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. It consists of three long amino acid chains wound into a compact triple helix. Its structural unit, tropocollagen, has a molecular weight slightly below 300 kDa and contributes to the formation of collagen fibers—protein structures weighing tens of millions of Daltons—by replicating itself.
During the physiological process of tissue regeneration, the structure of collagen breaks down and releases amino acid sequences of various molecular weights known as peptides.
Shorter peptide chains (with lower molecular weight) are the first chains used to counteract matrix degradation, limit lytic enzyme activity, and stimulate new collagen synthesis.
For several years, researchers and physicians have understood the role of these peptides in the tropism of connective tissue, particularly in cartilage. In many studies, it has been shown that LWPs can significantly improve the symptoms and functionality of joints and peri-articular structures, protect the tissue matrix from excessive degradation, and strengthen and stimulate its regeneration.
